Anthony's birthplace has not to date been determined. However it is
known that he emigrated from Germany some time prior to 1730 when he was
naturalized in Philadephia (Rupp, p. 434). According to Muhlenberg's
Journals, he was a Church Warden in the Augustus Lutheran Church in
Trappe, PA, and his name (Antonius Heilman) is on the date stone of that
church. It is probable that his extended family emigrated to the Colonies
about the same time. This would include daughter Dorothea and her
husband Johannes Heizer, who had a practically newborn son whom they left
behind in Germany. the son was sent to join his parents later. This
would pinpoint the move to the Colonies between the birth of Dorothea's
son and her husband's purchase of land in 1727, Phil. Co.Children's name
are taken from their father's LWT.

Johannes:
Johannes and Dorothea probably emigrated to Philadelphia Co about 1727,
and possibly with Dorothea's family Anthony and Maria Salome Hallman.
Valentine, their first born child was left behind in Germany (He may have
been too young to travel), and followed his parents at a later
date.Jonathan was naturalized in 1740 in Philadelphia Co., and is listed
in Some Emigrants to America from the Ludwigsburg Dist., Wurttemberg.
However there is no proof of this to date."Van Bebber's Township
1682-1793", an unbound manuscript at the Hist. Society of Montgomery Co,
Norristown, PA tracks deeds of a 6000 acre grant from King Charles II of
England to William Penn and then 160 acres on down to John Heizer and
Dorothy, his wife, in 1744. In 1747 that land was conveyed to Johannes'
son Valentine Heizer and then to Valentine's heirs.Johannes and Dorothea
were members of the Augustus Lutheran Church of Trappe, PA, and are
mentioned several times by Pastor Henry Melchior Muhlenberg in his
Journals back to Germany. Johannes died in 1749 after what Pastor
Muhlenberg called a "long illness". As there was no cemetery at their
own church, the entire family was buried at the Mennonite Church Yard in
Skippack Twp.

Anthony was 33 years old when he and his wife deeded their share in his
father Isaac's and his sister Mary's estate to his brother Jacob on 11
October 1800. While a resident of Oxford Township, he bought from Joseph
Siegfried and his wife Elizabeth of Ruscombmanor Township, a tenement and
lot of ground containing 12 acres for 362 pounds and 10 shillings on 5
October 1806. In his will dated 11 June 1832, he left his houses, lands,
tan yards, bark mill, tanners tools, and hides, except one house which he
left to his wife Mary and $100 with furniture which she might want to
keep for her own use. After Mary's death, their son Levi is to pay 100
pounds each to Anthony, Catherine, and Elizabeth. His will is recorded
in the Registration Office, Reading, Berks County, PA, Volume 7, page 39,
George Smith, Registrar.

The family records tell that Mary was accidentally burned to death by
sparks from an old-fashioned fireplace.

He and his wife Sarah were supposedly buried at Spiess Church, Pricetown,
PA, in an unmarked grave which may have had field stones as markers.
There is no record of his grave in the cemetery records of the Pricetown
Church. He was a tanner, owned and conducted a business of this kind in
Pricetown, Pennsylvania, where he had other property. He married Sarah
Hess (? - 1834), also called Sally, on 9 August 1829. She died of
tuberculosis in 1834 and was buried with her husband. Levi had three
wives. Mary was born 6 August 1796 and died 10 September 1839 as
recorded in the Montgomery History of Berks County. His first wife died
in several weeks and the second in several months, and Sarah was his
third wife. (The dates here cannot be correct, as Mary would still have
been alive when he married Sarah. cwl) He died an accidental death of
which there are several accounts. One is that he and a neighbor were
cutting posts in the woods to build a fence. The neighbor took a
short-cut across a field and Levi
went home along the road with the cart. When he did not arrive for some
time, they set out to investigate the delay and found him lying in the
wheel tracks behind the cart. There was a pool of blood there and he
was dead. The cause of his death is not known.

Resided at Sassamansville, Douglas Township, Montgomery County,
Pennsylvania, married Esther Stauffer Eshbach (24 May 1833 - 18 Aug
1905), on 5 November 1854, by Reverend Nathan Yeager, pastor of Saint
Johns Lutheran Church, Boyertown, Pennsylvania. He was baptized, his
Godparents being his grandfather Anthony and his wife Mary. Esther was
born in Colebrookdale Township, Berks County, PA. She had two sisters,
Rachel E Eshbach (3 Oct 1834 - 1 Jan 1835) and Mary Eshbach (11 Nov 1832
- 11 Jun 1835). Esther was the daughter of Joseph Eshbach (20 Oct 1805 -
12 Nov 1875) and his wife Rachel Eshbach (1810 - 1834). When Esther
died, services were conducted in her home in Sassamansville, PA, at 9
AM, 22 August 1905, by Reverend A M Weber, followed by services at Saint
Johns Lutheran Church, Boyertown, Pennsylvania with internment in the
Fairview Cemetery, Boyertown, Pennsylvania. Esther was reared by the
Stauffer family because of her mother's early death. The text for the
funeral service at the house was
Psalms 4:9 in German and at the church Revelations 2:10 in German and
text from Job in English. She had two close aunts, Mary Stauffer Kepnor
(11 May 1819 - 10 Sep 1903) and Rebecca Stauffer Mull (1 Oct 1823 - 23
Mar 1908). William Hess Lefever was a well preserved man and in his
early years worked as a stone mason. He came to Boyertown where he
managed a farm for his father-in-law, Joseph Eshbach, for a time. He
afterwards entered into a partnership with his brother, Levi H, and they
conducted a general store at Sassamansville, PA, for a number of years
after which they sold out. William remained at the old place, then began
cigar manufacturing together with farming. He did a large business and
continued active until 1905 when he retired. After marriage, William
joined the Lutheran Church. When he died, services were conducted by
Reverend A M Weber in the Fairview Chapel, Boyertown, at 11 AM, Saturday,
25 November 1916, with internment in the Fairview Cemetery, Boyertown,
Pennsylvania. Their home in
Sassamansville had two front doors because for some time, he ran a hotel
on the one side of the home. Helen Lefevre has one of the bar room
chairs at the present time in her possession. The cigar business was
conducted in the cement building along the driveway.

Levi attended the public schools of Boyertown and Mount Pleasant
Seminary. When he was 16 years old, he learned the tinsmith trade,
serving an apprenticeship of four years. He worked at this trade in
Boyertown until 1878 and then embarked on a business of his own as
tinsmith and handler of stoves, etc., continuing for about 28 years. He
also owned a fine farm of 99 acres situated in Earl Township, 3 1/2 miles
northeast of Boyertown. It was well stocked and was a remunerative piece
of property. In 1905 he erected a frame house which replaced the log
cabin that had stood since the days of the Revolutionary War. He was
treasurer of the Electric Light Company of which he was one of the
organizers, chartered in July 1908. Since 1906 he was President of the
Firestone Fire Insurance Company. He was active in the Knights of the
Mystic Chain, in which he has held all the offices. After 1900 he was
Chaplain of the Popodickon Tribe #388 Order of Red Men, was District

elected a member of the Boro Council and served a one year term. In 1901
he was again elected for a three year term and in February 1909, was
elected as Chief Burgess for a term of three years. Levi and his wife
were members of Saint Johns Evangelical Lutheran Church in Boyertown. He
was a patient in the Reading Hospital for several months when he died in
1936. The funeral services were conducted by Reverend David Longacre in

Benjamin Halman, was born September 18th, 1783, in Perkiomen Township,
Montgomery County, Pa., where he followed farming. During the great
financial depressions from 1816 until 1827 many of that calling in
Montgomery and other counties failed financially, and in order to save
their creditors from losing any money, the distressed farmers sold their
farms at a great sacrifice and paid their debts, and with whatever little
balance left they wended their way to Canada where land could be had
cheap and thus made another attempt to gain a free home. And as a rule
all these parties in a very few years were possessors of valuable farms.
Such was the case with Benjamin, our Canadian progenitor. He suffered
financially during the great crisis as aforesaid, and finding things to
his advantage, he moved to Canada with his family in 1825. They left
Montgomery County, Pa, on the 6th of May with two double horse teams and
one single horse team. They crossed the Niagara River from Lewiston to
Queenston on a large "Flat Boat." Then they wended their way up to Dundas
and through the Beverly Swamp to Waterloo County, arriving at Jacob
Rosenberger's near Preston, where they made a stay of three days. Thence
they moved on a farm two miles west of Waterloo. Here he resided until
spring (1826) when he moved to North Dumfries Township, about one mile
east of Roseville, where he had purchased a most beautiful farm of about
200 acres, then nearly all forest. This farm is now (about 1910) in
possession of Ephraim, son of Menno H. Hallman. Here the old Grandfather
died full of years, September 10th, 1869. He was a member of the
Mennonite Church, and lived a strictly moral life. His principles of
Christianity were always a foremost in his dealings with his fellowmen.
His advice to his grand children, of whom the writer was one, was always
good. Our earliest recollection of him is when he held us on his knee
and instructed us to be a good boy. Three of his sons and a number of
Grand sons and Great Grand sons entered the ministry, On September 2nd,
1802, he was married to Elizabeth, daughter of Jacob and Margaret
(Harley) Detweiler. She was born August 8th, 1784, and died August 9th,
1856. To them was born a numerous family, all of which were born in
Montgomery County, Pa., save the youngest, Hannah and Wendel, who were
born in Waterloo County, Ontario.

Rev. Jacob Hallman, the eldest in the family, was born in Montgomery
County, Pa., November 18th, 1803. In 1822 he, in company with Mr. Lutz,
walked to Canada and made Waterloo County, Ontario, his home for about
two years. He left on a Sunday afternoon without any money and only a
little bundle of clothes. He earned his way as he went. When, after two
years of a stay he had earned some money he returned home, where he
remained till the following spring, when he persuaded his father and
mother and remainder of the family to go back with him to Canada.
Sometime after his arrival he was married to Eva, daughter of Christian
and Polly (Ruth) Strome. She was born Sept. 9th, 1805, and died July
11th, 1886. Soon after their marriage they moved on their farm of about
200 acres, in Wilmot Tp., about two and one half miles north of New
Dundee, where they resided until their deaths. In 1837 he was called to
the ministry of the Mennonite Church, which body he served faithfully for
over forty years. His sermons were always plain, practical, and
accompanied with a strong appeal to the younger members of the
congregation to live up to the teachings of the Scriptures. His great and
only desire was that he might pass the rest of his days in the humble yet
honorable service in the ministry of the Lord, to which he was so
sincerely attached. His companionship was always pleasant. Even in his
last months of suffering, when the writer was privileged to take his turn
with one of his grand sons, once a week to watch over him during the
night, he always had an encouraging and instructive word for us boys.
How blessed these memories are to those of us who are following them to
the same future home. What lasting impressions for good they have left.
He died March 23rd, 1878. His family consists of six children.

Margaret Hallman, was born August 31st, 1805 and died March 18th, 1884.
She was married to Adam Unger, (born in Lancaster County, Pa.,) October
31st, 1824. In February, 1825, they moved to North Dumfries Township, on
lot No. 32, one mile east of Roseville, on a farm of about 150 acres,
where they resided until their death. It was not the privilege of the
writer to be as well acquainted with this his beloved aunt, as he was
with some of the others. But, like the others in the family, she was
firm in her principles of righteousness. They had a family of seven
children.

Maria Hallman, was born September 10th, 1806, and died March 8th, 1873.
She was married to Jacob Bechtel. They resided in North Dumfries
Township, Waterloo County, Ontario, near the old "Black Horse" hotel,
where they owned a farm of about 150 acres, where he died. After his
death she made her home with her daughter Catharine, who was married to
Benjamin Snyder, shere she died in the year. They were both members of
the Mennonite Church, and to these principles they adhered till they
died. She was a good mother, and always sought to instil into the minds
and hearts of her family the noble and elevating principles of
Christianity. They had a family of fourteen children.
